Attention cable news networks

I’ve heard a little about Pastor Hagee down in Texas and his anti-Catholic views. And I knew John McCain sought his endorsement and received it. But I didn’t know how crazy he was–or how influential–until I read this post by Steve Benen and did a little googling. Hagee seems to be the leader of what I would call Armageddon Theology:

Here’s summary of his activities back in 2006:

“Pastor John Hagee [is the] popular televangelist who leads the 18,000-member Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, Texas. While Hagee has long prophesized about the end times, he ratcheted up his rhetoric this year with the publication of his book, “Jerusalem Countdown,” in which he argues that a confrontation with Iran is a necessary precondition for Armageddon and the Second Coming of Christ. In the best-selling book, Hagee insists that the United States must join Israel in a preemptive military strike against Iran to fulfill God’s plan for both Israel and the West. Shortly after the book’s publication, he launched Christians United for Israel (CUFI)… .

At CUFI’s inaugural event July 16, 2006 in Washington D.C.

…after recorded greeting from George W. Bush, with four US Senators and the Israeli ambassador to the US in attendance, Pastor John Hagee stated : “the United States must join Israel in a pre-emptive military strike against Iran to fulfill God’s plan for both Israel and the West… a biblically prophesied end-time confrontation with Iran, which will lead to the Rapture, Tribulation, and Second Coming of Christ.”

Earlier this year, before the Texas primary, Hagee and McCain “met over breakfast“. The meeting must have went well because Hagee excitedly emailed his supporters:

Membership Update

January 29, 2007

This morning I had an extended breakfast with Senator John McCain of Arizona. Our topic of discussion was Israel and his candidacy for the Presidency of the United States of America.

Senator McCain’s comments concerning Israel are on target! He gets it! While I do not want to put the specifics of our conversation in this update I am glad to report to our leadership and supporters that John McCain is solidly pro-Israel.

We discussed his positions on other matters that I will share with you when I speak with you in person. This newsflash goes to the ends of the earth and I don’t want to read it in the media tomorrow.”

Now I realize reading this is a little abstract, so to get a real sense of what Hagee’s all about, let’s go to the video. In fact, I think the cable news outlets should do what they do best. Loop it. 24/7. Here’s Pastor Hagee:
