The Center for Disease Control has an interesting obesity graphic. Apparently Americans have gotten much fatter in the last two decades. In 1990 10-20% of the country was obese; now it’s 20-30%. The CDC defines obesity as body mass index of 30 or more. For example, I’m 5′ 9″. I’d have to weigh 200 pounds to qualify as obese. Here is the graphic: the prevalence of obesity, by state:

The CDC says there are two reasons people become overweight: genetics and behavior. Genetics can’t have changed in 20 years; why would behavior change so radically? This looks like fertile territory for some sociologist.
