The Danger of President Rudy

Back in 2000 George W. Bush was speechifying about a “strong but humble” foreign policy, “compassionate conservatism”, and portraying himself as a “uniter not a divider”. We know that was a sack of crap, and we would have been better off looking at the advisors and supporters coalescing around him: Cheney, Perle, Woflowitz. So who’s advising the current crop of Republicans? Via Josh Marshall:

“Romney’s profound phoniness…. cannot hold a candle to the truly catastrophic foreign policy Giuliani would likely pursue if he got anywhere near the Oval Office. Watching him campaign it’s pretty clear that the guy has no real sense that posturing and pandering to ethnic paranoia in New York City simply isn’t the same as running a national foreign policy. The people he’s coalescing around himself as his foreign policy advisors are the ones who are going to help him learn as he goes. And they are simply the most dangerous, deranged and deluded folks you can find in American political and foreign policy circles today. It’s really not an exaggeration. Scrape the bottom of the “Global War on Terror” Islamofascism nutbasket and you find they’ve pretty much all signed on as Rudy advisors

Where would we find a list of those at “the bottom of GWOT Islamofascism nutbasket”? I am curious to know whether any of the Bush administration neo-con nutcases are in the Giulani nutbasket.

I, too, am anxious to follow up on this. An equally damning article by Kevin Baker appeared in the August Harpers. Titled “A Fate Worse Than Bush,” it focuses on the Giuliani and the “Politics of Personality.” Baker says that “as repugnant as George W. Bush’s brand of social conservatism has been [cronyism, bullying, authoritarian impuse, no recognition of objective reality], there is no reason to believe that Rudolph Giuiliani’s presidency would be substantially different.” This is scary.
